A Day of Giving

Jarrod Lamshed in Adelaide Australia held an event called Clippers for Cancer at his Boys School last year. It was a great success, raising over $1800. Read his post describing the event.

Mr. Lamshed, Mr. Chamberlain, Mr. McClung and others have emphasized giving in their classes. (You may not be familiar with these names yet, but you will before the semester is over.)

What do you think of this idea for EDM310. Could we do something, say for the victims in Haiti, the Susan G. Kopman Breast Cancer Foundation, or another charity?

Are you interested? Do you think it is a good idea to include sharing and giving as objectives in a class? Would you help?

The date has been set: Monday March 1. Leave your reactions and ideas as comments to this post and I will discuss it further with you.

  1. I think that is an amazing idea. I would love to help both in sharing and giving. My personal charity is and always will be RAINN, so I am inclined to suggest them. However I would interested in helping with any charity chosen.

  2. http://rainn.org/ and on twitter http://twitter.com/rainn01

It's the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network. They are the largest anti-sexual assault organization. South actually hosts a RAINN day a couple of times a year. Usually once on the official day in September and again in April, which is sexual assault awareness month. They are a really amazing organization, but a lot of people don't like doing school functions with them because of the touchy subject.

  3. I am a girl so I won't shave my head.. but I would get m hair cut shorter.
It's a simple way to help others that everyone can be a part of.

  4. I think this is a great idea. My heart goes out to all of the people in Haiti. I also have so many loved ones who have been affected by cancer. I would be more than willing to help with whatever fundraiser is chosen. I am not sure about shaving my head though. I do have two little boys who might be up for it.

  6. Great idea, but I would rather do it for less-known or less-publicized charities. Ovarian cancer comes to mind.

  7. Because of the recent disaster in Haiti, I think it would be great to provide some sort of aide to those suffering in their already impoverished and now completely devastated country.

  8. I think this is a wonderful idea. I agree with Rachael about supporting a lesser-known charity. One dear to my heart is the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance( www.tsalliance.org) My nephew was born with this rare genetic condition on October 24, 2009.

  10. I think this is an absolutely wonderful idea. My only issue is that there are so many charities out there. It almost seems cruel to pick just one. Is there anyway we may pick two or three? I definately think we should give to Haiti because they are not out of the water yet, but I also believe that all the other charities diserve something too.

  11. I like this idea..I'm not too fond of shaving my head, but I would like to help out in any way possible. I agree with Heather that we should do it for more than one charity if it would be possible.

  12. The idea is okay for boys and maybe girls that want their hair to be shorter. I would never cut my hair because I want my hair to be longer. However, I wouldn't mind donating money if I have it. Why not do it for all different kinds of charities, not just one.
