The first teacher on our list is Mrs. Jenny She who teaches second grade at the Pt England School in Auckland, New Zealand. Mrs. She and the Pt. England School have been special friends of EDM310 for a very long tome - almost 5 years now. Mrs. She uses a lot of technology with her second graders. You will be leaving comments on class pages that are organized by student or topic. You must do 3 things before you start leaving your comments on Mrs. She's posts:
1. You must watch the video at the link in Column C of the C4K Assignment Sheet.
2. You must read the Literacy Cycle on the right of the Class Blog
3. You must read the material about Class 18 immediately under the Class 18 picture

After that, find the post for which you are to leave a comment. Find that post by looking for the name/category shown in Column F of the C4K instructions.

Leave your comment on the most recent post for your assigned category/name no matter what the date is on the post.

This is a second grade class in New Zealand. It is assigned to all EDM310 students, even those who will not be teaching elementary students because I want you to understand how one teacher half way around the world uses technology with second graders. That understanding will be needed in a Special Blog Post that all EDM310 students will have to do soon. So don't just leave a comment. Think about how technology is a part of the instructional process. And think about why it is being used.

Mrs. She is expecting your comments. be sure to identify yourself as being in EDM310.

Red Names

Why are some EDM310 student names in red?

Because those students did not post the summary post for C4K comments on time.

Therefore, I assume they have not done their C4K assignments. I will investigate further.

Students who do not do their C4K assignments make me very unhappy which is not a good thing. Why does that make me unhappy? First, I believe you should do all of your assignments on time. Second, and most importantly, I fear some student in some class will not get a comment while his or her classmates will and I do not like that at all.

You are in school to learn. You only learn if you DO. Not doing is not learning. There is much to learn from the way all teachers use technology - no matter what grades or subject matter you will teach! Think about that. A question: Did you also think about the name of the blog for the class? What does it tell us?

Oh, by the way. Can you find Auckland, New Zealand on a map? I would suggest you locate it. I would hope you would do that automatically - without a prod from me.

Where Have All the Project 13s Gone?

In 1955 Pete Seeger wrote "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" I borrowed his title, not because of the content of his song, but because I wonder where all of the Project 13 Posts have gone? They are not on the blogs of over 1/3 of the students in EDM310. Thirty-seven out of 96 are not present. Why? Where have all the Project 13s gone?

If your group did Project #13 (Learning Plan #1) but you have not posted it to your blog, do so immediately!

And what of the other assignments recently due? How many are missing? Fewer, but way too many!

Bonus

Since Mardi Gras and Spring Break were combined this year, I am going to give you a bonus. There will be no C4K assignments this week. A new C4C and C4T have been assigned you, however. And I have not made assignments based on discipline so those of you who want to be coaches will experience general teachers and some of you who do not intend to be coaches will have a C4T who is a coach. Now you can broaden your experience!

In addition,the midterm questionnaire will be sent out Wednesday or Thursday. It will be due Sunday March 16 at midnight.

In general I am quite pleased with the work of most students this semester. Thank you!

Eyes and Mind Opened

Here is an edited email he sent to me today March 1, 2014

I actually went to Davidson High School on Friday and observed what Mr. Finnigahn was doing there. I was surprised that the kids in his class where all excited about what they were doing and loved the class. In the class the students had a project to develop a product for the ACME company to help save them from going bankrupt. The end objective was to teach problem solving, critical thinking, and group skills. I have never seen a class room where students were so excited about learning together. The students in this class came up with their own ideas and I was shocked at how advanced some of them were. Every student I talked to said that they would prefer every class to be like this one. I was skeptical about PBL at first because of the freedom that students would have. This experience has shown me that when you give students freedom to develop their own projects and express their ideas to learn they will shock you. My views of PBL have been changed because of this experience. I was also invited back next week to judge their presentations.

I have decided that since the classes this semester seem to be doing much better than in the past I will change the MANDATORY CLASS Requirement next week to only one meeting. I seriously thought about eliminating all mandatory meetings next week. I may still do so. Watch the Class Blog for more details.

As of now mandatory class meetings next week will be

Section 701 (TT 11-12:15) will meet THURSDAY 11-12:15
Section 702 (TT 2-3:15) will meet THURSDAY 2-3:15
Section 703 (MW 4-5:15) will meet WEDNESDAY 4-5:15
Section 704 (W 6-8:30 pm) will meet WEDNESDAY 6-7:15 pm

If there are any further changes I will announce them on the Class Blog.

Blog Post Assignments Revised

The Blog Post Assignments Document has been revised today 2/11/14. We are currently using Version 5. Be sure you are using the correct version.

Changes made:

1. Driving Question clarified for Blog Post #5

2. The use of the rubric developed by EDM310 students is again postponed. Watch the Class Blog for further instructions.

7 Posts Not Done Despite the Ice and Snow

How wrong I was! After 3 days of ice and snow, with nothing to distract you, I thought we would break all records and have 100% of the blog posts due last night (Sunday 2/2/14) submitted on time despite the Super Bowl. Alas, I was wrong. Seven students did not post this week. Another was not on topic and was unsatisfactory. Oh my. Where have all the enthusiastic learners gone? (A reminder that Pete Seeger died this week. Where Have all the Flowers Gone?)

Blog Post #3 Still Due Sunday midnight.

I just moved PART of the assignment for Blog Post #3 (Part d) to be a part of Blog Post #5. The instruction manual has been changed accordingly. The part I moved concerned the use of the rubric. Just comment without using a rubric.

Lab Open Saturday 2/1/14 From 9-6

Even though the Doc with the Lab times that I have shared says otherwise, the EDM Lab (3301) WILL be open Saturday 2/1/14 from 9am - 6pm

Important Change to Blog Post Assignment #3

We did not complete the rubric as fast as I had hoped. Since this is the first semester in which I decided that you would put it to use, I made a guess about timing and I was wrong. That's not the first time I have been wrong! When you conduct experiments (as I am always doing) you seldom get it right the first time. So… I have moved the application of the rubric as an evaluation mechanism for classmates to Blog post #5. That gives us 2 weeks and a mandatory class meeting next week to get things sorted out.

Thanks to several students for raising questions about this.

Another thing: we are now using Blog Post Assignments Version 4. Be sure you are up to date.
